Detoxing your home is about reducing the unnecessary chemical load on you and your family. Small changes can add up to a big difference over time.
Kitchen: reduce what you ingest daily
The kitchen is one of the most important places to start because it directly affects what you eat and drink.
1. Remove plastic
Swap plastic chop boards and cooking utensils for wood. Replace old plastic containers with glass or stainless steel, especially for heating food. Avoid microwaving food in plastic or putting plastic in the dishwasher.
2. Upgrade cookware
Move away from non-stick pans and consider stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic alternatives.
3. Simplify cleaning products
You don’t need a large range of harsh cleaners. Plant-based alternatives or simple ingredients like vinegar and bicarb can cover most daily cleaning needs.
4. Filter drinking water
A basic filtration system can help reduce chlorine and other impurities commonly found in tap water.
Bathroom: simplify, switch low-tox, and be mindful
The bathroom is where most people unintentionally layer the highest number of daily products—skincare, haircare, oral care, cleaning, and kids’ bath products. It’s also one of the easiest rooms to simplify because small swaps make a big difference quickly.
1. Clean skincare and haircare
Choose simpler formulations with transparent ingredients that avoid fragrances, PEGs, parabens and sulphates.
2. Switch to non-plastic toothbrushes
Replace conventional plastic toothbrushes with horsehair or boar bristle alternatives.
3. Be mindful of kids’ bathroom and bath products
Children’s skin is more sensitive, so:
- avoid heavily fragranced bubble baths
- choose gentle, low-irritant washes
- reduce unnecessary colourants and overly complex formulas
Bedroom: create a low-tox sleep environment
Your bedroom should support rest, recovery, and low irritation exposure.
1. Choose natural fibres for bedding and clothing
Opt for breathable materials like organic cotton, linen, or bamboo.
2. Reduce fragrance exposure
Avoid synthetic room sprays and heavy fragrance products. Keep scent minimal and ventilation natural.
3. Improve air flow
Open windows daily, even briefly, to support fresh air exchange.
4. Consider mattress materials
If replacing a mattress, look for lower-VOC options and breathable materials.
Laundry: what touches your skin all day
Clothing and bedding carry products directly against your skin for long periods.
1. Use fragrance-free detergent
Fragrance is a common skin irritant. Switching to fragrance-free options can reduce exposure.
2. Reduce fabric softener use
Many fabric softeners leave residue on fabrics. Consider wool dryer balls as an alternative.
3. Add an extra rinse cycle if needed
This helps remove detergent residue, especially for sensitive skin or activewear.
4. Wash more gently
Not everything requires hot washes or heavy cycles. Gentler washing extends fabric life and reduces chemical load.
Additional small habits that make a big difference
- Remove shoes at the door to reduce walking in outdoor residues
- Open windows daily for airflow
- Vacuum daily to reduce household dust, allergens, and chemical residues
- Replace products as they run out rather than all at once
